A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE S.N.A.G.
By Louis Krudo
The latter part of 1993 I was fortunate enough to be introduced to martial arts by the name of Kali followed by another Filipino art called ARNIS which derives its name from the Spanish “arnis de mano” literally meaning “harnessing of the hand” and can also find root meaning with the decorative harnesses worn on the hands of the Moro-Moro actors in the Philippines.
While I became consumed by the physical beauty of the martial arts I also found that the drive was more intense as the bruises, lumps and occasional trips to the emergency room highlighted my progression.
A key element to the art is the incorporation of various weapons that not only enhance the fighting style but add practical application to the ability to fuse both into one movement.
While reading an article on specific tools I happened to lose focus on the utility of the item and concentrate on the shapes and how they could be developed into a more compact object such as a knife or striking instrument.
After a period of trial and error making templates out of everyday items like cardboard, plastic and wood I presented the idea to a few trusted souls and did a little brain storming to see if I could get this off of the ground. As fate would have it the legal scare associated with the original design necessitated that I put this on the back burner for a while…three years to be exact.
Unfortunately during that time another designer came up with something so similar that I had all but given up on my dream. Then the fighter in me decided to hell with lying down…if I came up with one design I can surely make another and this time “NO Procrastinating!”
After a bit of trial and error, glue and saw blades I had a primitive example of what is now in production and is aptly named: S.N.A.G.
